The revision to the Swiss Insurance Policies Act means that new rules apply to all private insurance contracts from 1 January 2022. You can read our article to find out what your benefits are as a customer. You can use our sample templates to easily exercise your new right of cancellation, ordinary right of cancellation and cancellation in the event of a claim, for example.
Sample templates
If you sign an insurance contract, you can cancel it within 14 days. The insurance provider is obliged to notify you of this right of cancellation in a form that allows proof by text. If you are not made aware of your right of cancellation or are not made aware of this until a later time, you have four weeks to exercise it from the date on which you are made aware of it.

Both contracting parties are entitled to ordinary cancellation of the contract after three insurance years have passed, even if the contractual conditions in the General Policy Conditions state otherwise. This provision applies to contracts concluded before 1 January 2022 and is mandatory.

You are entitled to cancel your insurance after you have reported a claim and the insurance provider has accepted it. Check the General Policy Conditions to see which deadlines have to be met for cancellation. Unless stated otherwise, your cancellation must reach the insurance company no later than when you receive the compensation payment.

Periods of notice and cancellation dates vary widely for supplementary insurance policies. As a result, please check the cancellation terms in your insurance contract between you and your health insurer.
Please note that the cancellation terms for supplementary insurance differ from those for basic insurance. As a result, you need to cancel your basic insurance and supplementary insurance separately.

The normal cancellation date for compulsory basic insurance is 31 December. The notice period is one month. This means that, to comply with the notice period, your insurer needs to receive your notice of cancellation on the last working day in November. The date of the postmark is not decisive.
If you have a normal insurance model with the lowest deductible (adults CHF 300.00/children CHF 0.00) and free choice of service provider, you can also cancel your policy on 30 June. For this, the notice period is three months. In other words, your insurer needs to receive your notice of cancellation on the last working day in March, at the latest, in order to comply with the notice period.

The law prevents duplicate compulsory basic insurance from being taken out. As a result, in principle you can only conclude a new insurance contract once your old one has ended. Nevertheless, people often end up with duplicate basic insurance.
Our tip: get in touch with both insurers and clarify how the duplicate insurance could have come about.
It is not possible to switch health insurer if you have not given notice of cancellation in good time or have unpaid invoices with your old health insurer. If this is the case, you can use our sample template to terminate the insurance contract with the new health insurer. There is no set deadline to do so.
