We cover cancellation costs.

To make sure that cancellations before or during your holiday don’t cost you a thing.

Anything unexpected has the potential to derail our holiday plans. In those moments, our travel insurance is worth its weight in gold: it covers all of the cancellation costs incurred – from rebooking flights to concert tickets.

The example of Marcel and Yannick

The two school friends are finishing up packing their suncream and socks before closing the door to their flat and stepping into the lift. As they are loading the car to head off to the airport, they discuss the final details of their five-day trip to Barcelona. But disaster strikes when they are driving down the motorway: a lorry crashes into their car. The two friends are unharmed, but their car is a write-off. The delay causes them to miss their flight and they are unable to go on holiday

What they need to do now

Marcel and Yannick both took out travel insurance with Generali. After they have informed the police and their breakdown assistance service, they should inform their travel insurance about the accident when they get a moment. Their travel insurer can be contacted 24/7 before and during their trip. Generali’s travel hotline is available 24/7, 365 days a year on +41 848 800 400 400.

These cancellations costs are covered

Cancellation costs are included in Generali’s basic travel insurance module. If you need to cancel or postpone your trip, we will cover cancellation costs of up to CHF 50,000 for individual insurance and up to CHF 100,000 for family insurance. The most obvious reasons for a cancellation are accidents and illness (including coronavirus). The cancellation costs of activities you have booked but have not been able to take up are also covered. In Marcel and Yannick’s case, we would organise and pay for the tickets for the next flight and reimburse them for the unused part of their stay.

This could include: Hotel stays or entry tickets for the football match they booked but could not attend.

Sample calculation: this is how much you’ll save

Without travel insurance, Marcel and Yannick would lose as much as CHF 500 each:

  • Ticket rebooking: CHF 100
  • Supplement for a more expensive plane ticket: CHF 150
  • Unused hotel room: CHF 100
  • Entry tickets for the football match: CHF 140

By contrast, the cancellation costs module costs CHF 92.20 a year for individual insurance. Thanks to this module, Marcel and Yannick would only be spending a quarter of the total amount they have lost – which is money that they will then be able to use for their next holiday or another treat.
