Household contents: Household contents insurance covers movable property that is not part of the building or the building’s basic equipment. That is the items that belong to you. These items are insured against risks such as fire, water, theft and glass breakage.

Personal liability: Personal liability insurance, on the other hand, covers damages that you cause to third parties. This includes property damage and personal injury. For example, damage to property belonging to third parties or personal injury resulting from an accident you caused.

• Insurance for riding loaned horses

• Household contents (accidental damage)

That depends on the cost of the contents of your household. If you have average furnishings in a three-room apartment, we generally recommend coverage of around CHF 100,000. You can view more recommendations when you calculate your premium. 

It is important that you do not select coverage that is too low. That would mean you are under-insured. If you are under-insured, you will not receive payment for all damages when you make a claim. We therefore recommend checking your coverage amount regularly. Over time, or when you move into a larger apartment, the value of your household contents may rise. It’s important that you adjust the insured sum at that time. 

You are not required to have household contents insurance in Switzerland. However, this is still a very important insurance to have if you want to ensure you have financial protection for your personal belongings and your household contents in the event of damages or theft. 

We recommend purchasing household contents insurance once you move out of your parent’s home. Or at the latest when you move into a home of your own.

Gross negligence means that a person has failed to take basic cautionary measures, ones that a sensible person would have taken in the same situation. For example, if you live in a ground floor apartment but leave the terrace doors open all night. If your valuables are then stolen as a result, your actions would be considered grossly negligent.
