Personal liability insurance is not mandatory in Switzerland, but we highly recommend it to everybody. That’s because this insurance covers damages that you accidentally cause to third parties, something that can very easily happen as part of your day to day life. We recommend personal liability insurance for both individuals and families. Third party liability insurance is also particularly useful for tenants, homeowners and those who are self-employed.

Tenants and homeowners: Whether you rent a place to live or own your own home, our personal liability insurance means you’re always well protected. We cover damage to the apartment you rent. And we’ve got homeowners well covered too. Renovations and repair work are also insured, if the work doesn’t exceed a total construction amount of CHF 100,000. 

Self-employed persons: Self-employed people working in a wide variety of sectors can get cover for their professional activities, up to an annual turnover of CHF 25,000. Examples include running a beauty salon, nursery or day-care centre, or working as an actor, writer, musician, hairdresser or sport instructor, or cleaning private households. 

That depends on whether you take out individual insurance or family insurance: 

Individual insurance: Pays for damages caused by you, the insured person. It also covers any damages caused by minors that are temporarily staying with you.

Family insurance: Family insurance pays for damages caused by all persons living in the same household. This includes married couples, cohabiting partners, children, siblings and parents. Children under the age of 26 who live outside the household and are not gainfully employed are also covered – for example students and apprentices. The insurance also covers minors that are temporarily staying with you.

There is personal liability insurance and commercial liability insurance. Personal liability insurance can be taken out by private individuals. Commercial liability insurance can be taken out by businesses. 

It varies from individual to individual. However, we recommend that you take out your own personal liability insurance at the latest when you move out of your parent’s house. 

Personal liability insurance pays when you accidentally cause damage to third parties. This includes property damage and personal injury. 

From the beginning of the contract. You can find this date in your policy. Damages are covered starting on this date. 

The insurance is valid worldwide. It doesn’t matter if you cause damages at home in Switzerland or abroad while on holidays: Our personal liability insurance will pay regardless of your location.  

That depends on the amount and type of coverage you select. But you can take out third-party liability insurance starting at CHF 100 a year. 

You can cancel the insurance every year on the policy’s expiry date. The expiry date is stated in your policy. The notice period for cancelling a contract is three months.
